Oh, the Irony

North Beach is finally being redeveloped, but the organization that has been its staunch cheerleader for years is now going broke. Who or what is to blame? And will the Miami Beach Festival of the Arts die because of it?

SoFi Struggle

Residents south of Miami Beach’s Fifth Street say bars and restaurants are using “hotel accessories” as a means of setting up shop, attracting more traffic and intoxicated tourists. They’d like the Planning Board to do something about it. And the Planning Board? Well….

Miami Beach

Ocean Drive magazine’s Jerry Powers really likes bars and clubs. Journalists who jeopardize that love had better watch out, especially if they’re going to appear in a video. Middle Beach Homeowners, though, are not too fond of the Planning Board.

Miami

Commissioner Tomas Regalado is running for re-election against the invisible man and the pro-development Miami 21 agenda. Meanwhile, the city’s police oversight board will have to make do with a lot less.

The Misshapes Get Bent — Beautifully

By John Hood

Photos courtesy of the Misshapes

“The great thing is that even if you’re ugly, you’ll look cool in our photos.” So says Greg Krelenstein, “the Other Guy” in the NYC threesome known as the Misshapes. Whether that statement is true is hard to tell, ’cause I can’t seem to find an ugly mug among the thousands snapped and featured in the just-out book of killer portraits they’ve suitably tagged Misshapes ($25, MTV Press). OK, so I did find a few who appear to be doing ugly things, but, in the eye of the Misshapen, that’s simply beautiful.

In addition to Krelenstein, the Misshapes are Leigh Lezark and Geordon Nicol. Lezark’s the face; Nicol, apparently, is the brain. Together the trio is something of a phenomenon.

Sprung from a “teenage rock ’n’ roll dance party” at Manhattan’s still-legendary Don Hill’s, the Misshapes (whose name’s nicked from a Pulp song, which sprang from Mis-Shaped chunks of chocolate) have turned flair into a lifestyle — not to mention a high-profile career. They spin (and have spun for the likes of Versace and Chanel), they party (check any Big Bad Apple blog for evidence) and, yes, they shoot, lining up the countless young pretties who flock to their happenings for what amount to the most glamorous mug shots in the whole wild world.

This Friday the Misshapes bring their spin and their shoot to Revolver — if you’re lucky, you might just get shot.

The Misshapes Book Party w/DJs Jackson Pollis and Lauren A. at 8 p.m. Friday. Revolver @ Pawn Shop, 1222 NE Second Ave., Miami. (Alley Entrance.) Call 305-373-3511.Free admission at revolvermiami@gmail.com.
