Ben! Shame on You! You Know Some Lives Just Aren’t as Valuable as Others!

[Re: “Blood Beach” by Ben Torter, published Sept. 11]

I just finished reading your article on the “record” number of murders so far this year in Miami Beach. After I finished, the word “bull-hockey” came to mind. I could not, for the life of me, fathom why the SunPost would have such a sensational cover, which has no reality to residents’ day-to-day public safety here. As a longtime resident here in Miami Beach, I was appalled at this Channel 7 type of scare tactic. I thought you were just trying to sell newspapers, and then I realized the SunPost is a free weekly! Most of these were acquaintance killings, and one was an occupational hazard killing (the prostitute). Any loss of life is sad and regrettable. Murderers should be prosecuted and sentenced accordingly. That being said, Miami Beach is a very safe place to live and raise a family. A cabbie killed after fighting with a fellow cabbie? A homeless man killing another homeless man? Ben, this has no bearing whatsoever on residents’ daily quality of life here. Please refrain from this type of sensationalistic reporting in the future. Miami proper has enough actual murders. You ought to be ashamed of yourself.

I’m With You, Molloy — Those Liberals Are So Smug!

[Re: “Make Me The President, Episode 37: Number Twos,” by Lee Molloy, published Sept. 18.]

Episode 37 of “Make Me The President” continues the hard-hitting, even-handed exposé of this election cycle. Lee Molloy is to be commended on this series. This particular article’s treatment of the Team Democrats [reminds] me [of] a continuing barrage of insults I receive daily as a conservative in this bubble of liberalism, South Florida.

Recently, the editor of Newsweek magazine, Jon Meacham, wrote that “in theory, liberals pride themselves on being more intellectually sophisticated and open to evidence than conservatives.” This confirmed for me a long-held belief of either elitism or smugness on their part. It is difficult to remain a Neanderthal, but I will continue to present other points of view, no matter how unsophisticated they may be.

Thanks for Saving Us Some Dough

[Re: “Trimming the Bids” by Ben Torter, published Sept. 25.]

The Thursday, Sept. 25, issue of the SunPost carried some of the best news in a long time. The city will now be more assertive in dealing with contractors bidding for public work in Miami Beach. After a discussion led by Commissioner Ed Tobin on Sept. 17, the mayor and commission decided unanimously to rebid an $8.5 million contract on South Pointe — despite the administration’s recommendation to award the project. Developers Fred Karlton and Michael Goldsmith, who do not bid public works, presented the case for a re-bid in anticipation of saving $500,000 to $1 million. Thank you, gentlemen. Given the recent economic crash, this seems like a reasonable enough assumption to me. So, congrats Commissioner Tobin, for swimming against the tide of our spendthrift status quo. Commissioner [Deede] Weithorn is also to be credited with rejuvenating and transforming the former [General Obligation] Bond Committee into what is now the Capitol Improvements Projects Oversight Committee. This encourages a more transparent and budget-conscious mindset. Imagine that. Campaign promises fulfilled.
