POWER WOMEN 2007 |
|
Lucia Dougherty |
|
The
influential law firm Greenberg Traurig employs many dogged and
talented women to fight for its corporate and developer clients.
We know this because the firm nominated nine female
shareholders, all with impressive résumés, for Power Women
designations.
Once again, the nod goes to
Lucia Dougherty because, well, Lucia Dougherty is a badass.
A city attorney
with the cities of Miami and Miami Beach during the 1980s,
Dougherty brought her legal know-how to the private sector to
help clients who want to enhance their land values or build
high-rises seek contracts with those cities. Dougherty can often
be seen in back rooms or in public forums, most often in Miami
and Miami Beach, arguing on behalf of Miami-Dade developers. Her
tenacity and knowledge of zoning laws and public officials have
made her the go-to gal in land-use circles.
An April 19
Miami Herald article described a negotiation between Vizcaya
members and her client, The Related Group, this way: “Despite
many statements by the night’s speakers that the developers are
good people, many worried that a deal with the developers and
attorney Lucia Dougherty would be a deal with the devil.”
Nevertheless, Dougherty and The Related Group won — gaining the
votes of three of five Miami commissioners to obtain the zoning
needed to build three high-rises near Mercy Hospital that could
ruin Vizcaya’s view. But, hey, getting “yes” votes for
development projects — with or without community support — is
all in a day’s work for Dougherty.
