POWER WOMEN 2007
Tracy Mourning

Tracy Wilson Mourning is much more than a Miami Heat first lady. The gorgeous wife of Alonzo Mourning and mother of two has become a key player in the South Florida community.

In 2002, Mourning founded the Honey Shine Mentoring Program, designed to provide positive experiences and mental, physical and spiritual nourishment for at-risk young women between the ages of 8 and 18. There, she and other women from the community host workshops and mentoring sessions at least twice a month to help the girls build self-esteem, discuss career opportunities and even swap beauty products.

“We want them to know that they are smart and talented and gifted,” Mourning said of the 100-plus girls who have participated in the program. “It’s about encouraging our girls that they are special and are going to do great things.”

Education is one remedy for low self-esteem and it’s a value that she learned from her mother. “I was fortunate to have a strong mother who understood the value of learning,” said Mourning, a graduate of Howard University. In addition to her hands-on involvement with Honey Shine, Mourning raises funds for the organization by coordinating and hosting the annual Hats Off Luncheon, now in its sixth year.

Honey Shine is part of Alonzo Mourning Charities, which also include the popular Zo’s Summer Groove and the more recent King Pin Classic at Lucky Strike Lanes. Tracy Wilson Mourning also has been extremely involved in these programs since their inception. For her, the idea of being a person of power comes from a greater calling. “True power comes from above,” she said. “My spirituality gives me peace and empowerment. And I strive for this to be reflected in the ideologies of Honey Shine.”
