Reason for Season 2007: Books

Miami Book Fair International

The Miami Book Fair International promises throngs of authors, book lovers and lecturers. Photos courtesy Miami Book Fair International

Granted, there’d be no Miami Book Fair International without the great folks at Miami Dade College, just as there’d be no great books without the great writers who write them, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t credit the great work of Mitchell Kaplan, who got it all started back when it was Books by the Bay. Of course, books are not only Kaplan’s game, they’re his life, and the recently celebrated 25th anniversary of his Books & Books is testament to that rad fact. So when you catch the cat at the fair this year — and you will; he’s everywhere! —

Why Kerouac Matters author John Leland meets Joyce Armstrong  — who mattered to Kerouac. Weird

give him your gratitude. With the onslaught that he and his have scheduled for this year, rest assured there’s much, much, much to be thankful for. Here are some book fair highlights. For details, visit www.miamibookfair.com.

John Leland and Joyce Armstrong

Hard to say who got closer to Jack Kerouac: New York Times scribe John Leland, who spent considerable effort explaining Why Kerouac Matters, or Joyce Armstrong, who back in the ’50s was Jack’s gal. Either way, both are intimate with the subject, and for the 50th anniversary of On the Road, you’ll undoubtedly wanna be this close.

Jed Perl, Alex Ross and Philip Lopate

The Rest Is Noise author Alex Ross and friends are gonna serve up some know.

With The New Republic’s Jed Perl on art and The New Yorker’s Alex Ross on music, you’re gonna get the know; with all-around smart guy Philip Lopate in the middle, you’re gonna get know-how, too. That Perl’s most recently rankled none other than Gerhard Richter and that Ross’ The Rest Is Noise has just left green all those studious sorts who thought they knew what the 20th century sounded like, means the know’s gonna come from some very acute angles. Good thing Lopate will know how to handle it.

Lu Vickers and Betsy Carter

The first known mermaid story may date back to the Assyrians of 1000 B.C., but the first known mermaid in Florida only goes back to 1947, when Walton Hal Smith and Newt Perry opened the fabled theme park known as Weeki

Literary siren Lu Vickers

Wachee. Those fetching creatures have been part of Sunshine State lore ever since. Vickers, a mid-state scribbler with a yen for water, hit the park’s archives and interviewed scores of finned-fatales for her breath-holding chronicle; Carter, who bylines in the Big Bad Apple, chose the maidens and the place to story Swim to Me, and both get deep into a very sexy life aquatic.

Susie Horgan, David N. Meyer and Crystal Zevon

David Meyer, honorary Punk Rock Girl

Miami’s-own keen-eyed lensgirl Susie Horgan came up in D.C. alongside Henry Rollins and Ian Mackaye when Black Flag and Minor Threat were mere hardcore youth, and her Punk Love does much to define their legend; culture scribbler David Meyer, who counts the noir-soaked guide A Girl and a Gun among his exploits, sought the soul of balladeer Gram Parson’s Twenty Thousand Roads; and Crystal Zevon’s memoir-tinged oral history I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead not only gets to the dirty life and times of ex-husband Warren, it gets Carl Hiassen to set it into play. All three know well why we listen.

Lynne Barrett: Shady lady

Lynne Barrett, John Bond, John Dufresne and Vicki Hendricks

Maybe it’s the undone of the sun, or maybe it’s just our nature, but never is noir as dark or as shady as it is in South Florida. Just check the Les Standiford-edited Miami Noir for evidence. Florida Book Review editor/founder Lynne Barrett (James M. Cain Cookbook), Dania Beach’s John Bond (a sorta poker-playing Travis McGee), FIU creative writing cat John Dufresne (Johnny Too Bad) and adventuress Vicki Hendricks (Cruel Poetry) all had cuts in that Akashic collection, and each always verses well how we bleed. With Queenpin Megan Abbott on hand to moderate, the spill’s gonna be considerable.

Before he exits, Michael Largo makes an entrance.

Michael Largo

Death becomes us, whether we dig it or not. And for some odd reason, death becomes the rich and famous in ever more cruel and unusual form. Largo, who last year gave us a compendium of Final Exits, now follows up with The Portable Obituary, the logical next step in how many heavyweights conclude. It’s fast, it’s funny and it’s fantastic — kinda like life itself.
