Reason for Season 2007: Fairs and Parties

Carnaval Miami

Chicas from all over will be shaking their assets during Carnaval Miami.

Carnaval Miami is such a huge annual affair that it’s actually broken up into 10 mini events held throughout Miami-Dade County. There’s the Carnaval Miami 8K Run for those who like exercise; the Carnaval Miami Golf Classic for those who feel the need to knock small, white balls into tiny little holes; the Carnaval Miami Domino Tournament for those who just can’t help talkin’ smack; and the Miss Carnaval Miami beauty pageant for those who like to look pretty. The street parties are where you’ll find the real fun, though. Carnaval on the Mile, from Mar. 7 to 9, offers jazz, food, wine, art and family fun in downtown Coral Gables. The two-week Carnaval culminates Mar. 16 with the Calle Ocho festival — the largest street party in the country, which usually draws more than 1 million people to Southwest Eighth Street in Little Havana for Latin music, arts and treats. Carnaval Miami events run from Feb. 28 to Mar. 16. For more information, visit www.carnavalmiami.com.

Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition

It may not be officially called the Youth Fair anymore, but the Miami-Dade County Fair is still the place to go to relive your younger days.

The Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition turns 57 this year, which is probably why they don’t call it the Dade County Youth Fair anymore. So if you are one of those individuals having a midlife crisis, we suggest that, instead of buying that Harley-Davidson motorcycle you don’t know how to ride, you head over to the fair from Mar. 27 to Apr. 13 and pretend you’re 10 years old again. Enjoy the roller coaster rides, games, petting zoos, souvenirs and greasy snacks alongside the young whippersnappers. General admission is only $9, free for kids under 5. A book of 34 ride tickets is $30. The Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition is located at Coral Way and 112th Avenue. For more information, visit www.fairexpo.com or call 305-223-7060.

White Party Week 2007

Cyndi Lauper will perform at the White Party finale at Vizcaya.

Barring an actualization of the unsubstantiated 1970s global cooling threat, White Party Week 2007 is probably the closest most South Floridians will get to snow. The annual flurry brings out 15,000 party-goers, mostly dressed in white, for six days of nonstop parties to raise money for the fight against HIV and AIDS. Droves of supporters will kick off the event with flair Nov. 21 at the Victory Party at INK and Dolce Women’s Event, both in Miami Beach; and at the White Hot Leather Ball in Fort Lauderdale. The week continues with plenty more opportunities to party like a rock star while supporting a good cause, and culminates with the 23rd annual White Party grand finale at Vizcaya with a special performance by Cyndi Lauper. For details and tickets, visit www.whiteparty.org or call 305-576-1234.
