Reason for Season 2007: Film

Miami International Short Film Festival

Johnny Sneed stars in Partially True Tales of High Adventure!

Hardly short on chic, the sixth incarnation of the Miami International Short Film Festival running from Nov. 26 to Dec. 2 promises to be one of those not-to-miss film events. And since the films are short, there’s no excuse not to go. The festival — featuring more than 100 screen gems from around the world along with filmmaking workshops, awards and lectures — aims to open up “new audiences in South Florida for short films.” The winner of the competition will receive a $12,000 grand prize. “We always try to find films with good screenwriting, technique and acting,” festival Director William Vela said. “And films with a good message too.”

Partially True Tales of High Adventure!, a 12-minute 2007 flick from Emmy-winning writer and director Murphy Gilson, is a tall tale in which a Midwesterner named Charlie (Johnny Sneed) makes the long trek to ever-magnetic Hollywood just to have his screenplay tank and his agent threaten to jump ship.

In the 18-minute German short Niemand liebt Dich so wie ich, Josy revisits her childhood home after the death of her mother, provoking a flood of painful memories. Directed by filmmaker Luca Zamai and written by Alexandre Powelz, the film has an impressive dossier of festival awards behind it, including Best Short Film at the 2007 Dresden Film Festival, the Platinum Award at the 2007 WorldFest Houston and the Best Foreign Short Jury Award at the 2006 New York Short Film Festival.

The 15-minute romantic comedy Once Upon a Christmas Village promises animated holiday fun and illustrates the festival’s diversity. James Belushi stars as the voice of Santa Claus, who is having a dreadful night after losing his magical pocket watch during a near-collision with Air Force One.

Films will be screened at the Miami Science Museum and Planetarium, the Bill Cosford Cinema at the University of Miami, Tower Theatre, the Miami Beach Cinematheque and the Miami Children’s Museum. Tickets are $10 to $13 and include four to 15 short films at each venue. For more information, visit www.miamishortfilmfestival.com.

Women’s International Film & Arts Festival

The Women’s International Film & Arts Festival celebrates special contributions of women in film.

The third annual Women's International Film & Arts Festival, which runs from Mar. 28 to Apr. 6 and coincides with Women’s History Month, promises 10 days of films, workshops, panel discussions and parties showcasing special contributions women have made to the film industry. The festival, chaired by Emmy Award-winning actress Ruby Dee, will feature a Family Fun Fest at Peacock Park and boasts a diverse selection of 40 films from more than 12 countries, including Spain, Australia, England, Germany, New Zealand, South Korea and Mexico. Screenings will fall into two main categories: U.S. Fem Cinema for films representing U.S. women and World She-View for international entries. Films will be shown at The Lyric Theatre, Miami Beach Cinematheque, AMC CocoWalk in Coconut Grove and the Byron Carlyle Theatre. Tickets are $10. Find out more about these female flicks at www.wiffonline.org.

The Miami International Film Festival

The Miami International Film Festival: Black Book

Little introduction is needed for the Miami International Film Festival; if you know about it, you know. More than 70,000 people are expected to attend this year’s film fest, which runs from Feb. 28 through Mar. 9. The MIFF 25th anniversary celebration will feature screenings, competitions and a new atmosphere of film appreciation created by more than 300 filmmakers and other industry pros. There will be four competition categories: World Features, Ibero-American Features, World & Ibero-American Documentaries and Short Films. Impressive grand jury prizes of $25,000 will be awarded in the drama and documentary competitions. Last year, the festival presented films from more than 50 countries, furthering the rep of one of the world’s premier showcases of film talent, which has been compared with such well-known festivals as Sundance and Cannes.
