Reason for Season 2007: Performing Arts

Wicked

An angry girl with green skin turns into a major … witch in Wicked.

Wicked, the musical story of the witches of Oz, tells the story of two friends and how they became known as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch.

Though it does reference the classic Wizard of Oz, most of the story, based on the best-selling novel by Gregory Maguire and directed by Tony Award winner Tony Mancello, takes place long before Dorothy ever set foot on the yellow brick road. Wicked, which opened in October 2003, is now the most popular show on Broadway. Its nationwide tour stops at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts Mar. 12 through Apr. 6.

Love Janis

Love Janis: a psychedelic portrait

Love Janis is a musical rendition of Janis Joplin’s unmistakable sound and lyrics and her very touching life. The show begins at the very beginning of Joplin’s career and leads to her first big break at the Monterey International Film Festival and her subsequent stardom. Performers read real letters Joplin wrote to her mother to show a woman few people actually knew — one who was sad, lonely and struggled with fame and addiction, which eventually ended her life. Her story entwines with her incredible songs to paint a captivating portrait of an incredible artist and unforgettable woman. See the show at the Parker Playhouse Feb. 29 to Mar. 2.

Martha Mitchell Calling

Martha Mitchell: the real Deep Throat

William Mark Felt, the real Deep Throat who funneled information about the Watergate scandal to Woodward and Bernstein, isn’t the person who really brought down the Nixon administration. Arguably, that honor belongs to Martha Mitchell, the wife of Attorney General John Mitchell and a larger-than-life Southern socialite who used her influence and intelligence to blow the whistle on the former president and his cronies. Actors will tell that story in Martha Mitchell Calling from Nov. 28 to Dec. 23 at Actors’ Playhouse at Miracle Theatre in Coral Gables. Tickets range from $33 to $100. For more information, visit www.actorsplayhouse.org or call 305-444-9293.

Spiegelworld

Bendy trapeze artists and deliciously limber performers will perform in this Spiegelworld tent.

Spiegelworld, billed as the “world’s most beautiful traveling venue,” features the performance show Absinthe, in which performers defy gravity, monotony, traditional senses of morality and the direction in which human body parts are supposed to bend in a sexual trapeze act, all inside a 350-seat mirrored tent. Its creator, former Cirque du Soleil clown Voki Kalfavan, takes center stage with his “dumb assistant Penny” in The Gazillionaire’s Late Night Lounge, an adult improv talk show cabaret, followed by a band called Fish Circus. The New York Times described Absinthe as “Cirque du Soleil as channeled through Rocky Horror Picture Show.” The avant-garde line-up of freakishly sexy daredevils makes its way to the 21st Street Boardwalk in Miami Beach from Dec. 20 to Feb. 17. Tickets start at $69. For details, visit www.spiegelworld.com or call 305-358-5885.
