Bye, Bye Orange Bowl

From a legion of football fans to a pile of rubble: the Orange Bowl will soon be history.

It’s official: The University of Miami Hurricanes are abandoning the Orange Bowl for a new home at Dolphin Stadium next season. But before UM turns its back on a 70-year-old football tradition, the Canes will play one last game at the Orange Bowl on Saturday, Nov. 10. So, head on over to Little Havana, and boo both the University of Virginia Cavaliers and the end of a long, distinguished era. If you miss that game, or just don’t like orange and green, the Florida International University Golden Panthers will be playing at the Orange Bowl until their new stadium is completed. So what if the Golden Panthers are on a record losing streak — think of it as an opportunity to support the hometown public university. Maccabi Games

Jewish athletes from around the world wil compete in the 26th annual Maccabi Games.

For the past 26 years, the Maccabi Games have been the social sporting event of the year for Jewish families. What began with about 200 athletes representing a handful of countries has grown to host 1,500 players at the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center in North Miami. This Olympic-style athletic competition is known as “the Jewish experience for the Jewish family of today” and welcomes participants from all walks of life for this weeklong event. The athletes’ ages range from 2 ½ until “your knees can hold you.” Competitors represent their countries — including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Israel, Venezuela and the U.S. — in such varied sports as soccer, flag football, kickball, tennis, dodgeball, and track and field.
