Reason for Season 2007: Visual Arts

Art Basel Miami Beach

Art Basel Miami Beach: a three-day extravaganza. Photo by Mitchell Zachs/magicalphotos.com

Since Art Basel Miami Beach — a spinoff of Switzerland’s mega event of the same name — arrived in South Florida in 2002, Christmas has come early for art lovers and scenesters alike. The art fest, from Dec. 6 to 9, includes the main event at the Miami Beach Convention Center, where 200 art galleries from all over the world will show off the works of 1,500 artists, and several cutting-edge satellite fairs. Art Miami — which recently decided if you can’t beat ’em, hold the fair in Wynwood during Art Basel week — will add yet another layer of arts exhibits and events to the weekend. Plus, don’t miss the public installations and galleries set up in storefronts and offices throughout Miami and Miami Beach. For a complete listing, visit www.artbaselmiamibeach.com.

ULAE’s 50th Anniversary

ULAE’s 50th Anniversary: A exhibition of early art

Universal Limited Art Editions 50th Anniversary exhibition will feature a major retrospective of more than 120 famous and groundbreaking lithograph prints and a live Art of Tango dance at its opening reception Dec. 8. ULAE, a renowned printmaking studio founded by Tatyana Grosman in 1957, revived contemporary printmaking by inviting now-revered artists to work alongside master printers at its Long Island studio. The anniversary exhibit will feature important early editions and current works by such artists as Jim Dine, Helen Frankenthaler and Jasper Johns. The exhibit will run from Dec. 8 to Jan. 14 at the Center for Visual Communication, 541 N.W. 27th St., Miami. 305-571-1415.

E-mail Is My Art

E-mail Is My Art: pop art with pizzazz

Picture Marilyn Monroe begging JFK to get DSL because she is tired of getting that dreaded busy signal. That’s exactly the image Alexander Vigilante reveals in his exhibition E-mail Is My Art. Vigilante, a native of Argentina who currently lives in Miami, grew tired of his banking job and followed in his father’s footsteps to unleash his artistic talents. Although Vigilante uses the Internet as an inspiration, no digital art is involved in his work. Other works depict Warhol chastising his protégé, Basquiat, for hanging out in Haring’s chatroom, and James Dean telling the mangled Spyder in which he died, “Dream as if you’ll live forever. E-mail as if you’ll die today.… I’m still pretty, you’re not!” Vigilante’s work will be on display from Nov. 30 to Dec. 16 at the 1st and 21st Gallery, 2045 N.W. First Ave., Miami. 917-385-8143.
