Bar
anniversaries are a good time to discover new
hangouts and, of course, get some specially priced
drinks. The place to celebrate this Friday night is
at The Bar in Coral Gables, which will mark its 61st
anniversary with a marathon party.
The
shindig will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. under
a tent in The Bar’s back parking lot. The event
kicks off with discounted drinks and giveaway items.
Live entertainment featuring DJ Cary “Boe” Kleinhams
begins at 9 p.m.
Since opening in 1946, The Bar has been a
neighborhood “beer and wine” joint favored by an
older crowd of blue-collar workers. However, its
clientele changed eight years ago, when owners
Richard Dispenzieri, John Donovan and Louis Petrillo
acquired a full liquor license and expanded its
stock to attract more upscale customers.
Today, The Bar is a hipster hideout where Gables
professionals meet for lunch and happy hour, and
University of Miami students party on the weekends.
“What we used to be was a place where blue-collar
workers, who were ‘cheap beer drinkers,’ hung out,”
Dispenzieri said. “Today, we attract a younger,
professional crowd.”
Will Vazquez of Coral Gables, customer of The Bar
since 1986, has seen firsthand how the
establishment’s regulars — including himself — have
changed. Once a die-hard Heineken drinker, Vazquez,
now a film producer and director, switched his drink
of choice to Grey Goose Vodka and cranberry juice.
“Before, it was a very bright place that had an
older crowd; now it has become more modern with
dimmed, colored lights,” Vazquez said. “I come here
often because the staff is friendly, the service has
always been good and the food is good. The Bar is
one of the few places in the Gables that still has a
sense of character, community and history.”
According to Vazquez, filmmakers and artists have
been intrigued by the watering hole’s history and
ambiance for many years and often stopped there to
film scenes or draw paintings of the place. During
the 1950s, airline stewardesses on layover from
Miami International Airport often gathered there,
too.
“The secret to our longtime success is that we
remained a neighborhood bar that keeps to tradition,
stays with the basics and we didn't become too
fancy,” said Domingo Murillo, The Bar’s general
manager since 1999. “We have a friendly staff that
mingles with friendly customers; it's a place where
everyone knows your name.”
The Bar also is the oldest bar in Coral Gables,
Dispenzieri said. And posters of beers and liquors
that were popular in the 1920s and ’30s hang on the
walls next to the wooden, horseshoe-shaped bar.
While The Bar has had its share of renovations, its
appearance hasn’t changed since it was built 61
years ago.
Besides being a historical locale, The Bar’s big
burgers and Belgian beers set it apart from other
Gables watering holes. Try the half-pound Bar
Burger, served on a toasted Kaiser roll with fries,
slaw, pickle, lettuce and tomato, for $7.25 and wash
it down with one of the many bottled, Belgium-brewed
beers, priced from $7 to $11.
Plus, there’s something going on there every night.
