Art & Film

The Miami art scene has been undergoing a serious renaissance for the past few years. With events like Art Basel attracting international attention, it is easy to see why this city  by the sea has made a name for itself in the art world.

Locally, the longstanding South Miami Art Festival will take place Nov. 4 and 5 along chic Sunset Drive, allowing visitors to revel in the juried exhibition of artists from all over the United States. This family event and street fair will feature painting, watercolor, mixed media, printmaking, drawing, digital art, photography, clay and glass, jewelry and metalwork, sculpture and wood.

From Europe to Latin America, the Bass Museum has all corners of the globe covered during an exciting exhibition season. Constructing New Berlin, running from Nov. 3 to Jan. 21, highlights 18 Berlin-based artists of various nationalities working in painting, sculpture, photography, film installation, video-installation, sound and performance art. This show will feature the first works to come out of this city post-destruction of the infamous wall.

Five Fridas, running from Nov. 8 to April 30, also at the Bass, will showcase the work of Mexico’s darling painter Frida Kahlo. The show will feature five small-scale works created by the artist between1928 and 1951, offering a candid glimpse into her interpretation of Mexican motifs.

The Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami will present a 30-year retrospective of Miami painter Humberto Calzada’s works. In DreamsAwake, on view from Dec. 2 to Jan. 28, is a compilation of architectural settings that offer a window on the artists’ Cuba, along with an intense look at his odyssey of exile.

Getting back to Art Basel Miami Beach (Dec. 7-10), this stunning international art show is the American counterpart of the revered Art Basel show in Switzerland, the most important annual art show worldwide for the past 37 years. This special event will bring out the brightest local and international talents with an exciting program of special exhibitions, parties and crossover events including music, film, architecture and design. (Shameless plug: Check out our Dec. 7 Art Basel issue for more info.)

Asser St. Val will push Miami residents to explore their distinctiveness with a show called Melanin, up Jan. 4 to Feb. 3.

The Design District’s Diaspora Vibe Gallery will host this collection of abstract figurative paintings that explore the framing of identity through race.

Art Miami 2007, the 17th Annual International Modern and Contemporary Art Fair, will take over the Miami Beach Convention Center from Jan. 5 to 9, with multimedia, photography, sculpture and drawings of established and emerging artists, judged by prestigious gallery owners from around the world.

Miami Art Central continues its impressive season of exploration into multimedia with an exhibition by Peter Friedl from Jan. 19 to April 8. Explore the Austrian mastermind’s extensive and diverse body of work from 1964-2006 that dissects politics, history and aesthetics. Contemporary American artist, Sol LeWitt will feature his works at the Miami Art Museum from Feb. 9 to June 3. LeWitt X 2 is a two-parter as the name suggests: Sol LeWitt: Structure and Line displays works from the course of the artists’ career, while Selections From the LeWitt Collection allows visitors a peek into the artist’s personal selections.

The coming season brings a plethora of visual attractions (we don’t even have room in this intro to get into film and video) to local venues. Perhaps the hardest part for art lovers will be making time to enjoy them all.
