2008 Best Of South Florida

July 3, 2008

Octavio Campos

Last year, Miami-born Octavio Campos won the SunPost Editors’ Choice Award for Best Local Choreographer. Campos studied dance and composition at the State University of New York, the Martha Graham School, the Folkwang Schule of Pina Bausch, Germany, and the Lincoln Center Director’s Lab. He has more than 100 professional dance credits to his name and has performed in theatres and opera houses in Europe, North America and South America. This year, we asked the founder of Camposition Studio@801 Projects for his personal picks for the Magic City’s best of arts and entertainment.

Best Place to See Live Music

Tobacco Road. I still love it; it’s still my favorite.

Best Place to Watch a Movie

Miami Beach Cinemateque.

Best Gallery

EdgeZone, which, sadly, recently closed down.

Best Performance Space

Arsht Center (Carnival Studio Theatre).

Best and Most Inspiring Thing About Miami

Its fucked-up people, the crazy eclectic people. Walking on the streets of Miami is theater. We are the misfit capital of the world!

Worst Thing About Miami’s Art Scene

It’s too expensive. There is not enough access, not everyone can go to everything — partly due to pricing, partly due to marketing. If there was more public money, tickets would go down and more people would go out. Culture is not a part of everyday life here in Miami; it is not part of the structure of everyday life. But, if we don’t do something, the live art form will only be for the elite in this town.
