Police Chief Retires

Assistant Chief Named Interim Chief

By Erik Bojnansky

Assistant Police Chief Carlos Noriega has been named acting police chief of the Miami Beach Police Department.

According to a March 29 memo from City Manager Jorge Gonzalez, Chief Donald De Lucca, a 26-year-veteran of the MBPD, would officially retire on June 30. “Beginning April 2, Chief De Lucca will be working on special projects and assisting with training, leadership and transitional issues in the Police Department and will play an active role in the upcoming Memorial Day and July 4th holiday weekends,” Gonzalez wrote.

Noriega joined the MBPD in 1984, starting as a patrol officer. In 2000 he was promoted to major and division chief and was put in charge of the Patrol Division and Technical Services Division. By 2006 he was promoted to assistant chief and commander of the administrative bureau.

De Lucca was named chief in 2001. Gonzalez credited De Lucca for crime dropping 38 percent between 2000 and 2006 and for increasing “diversity” within MBPD’s ranks.
