QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“It seems he died from natural causes 3 or 4 days before the fire.”--Assistant Miami Beach Fire Chief Eric Yuhr.

Street Talk 1-23

Question: Do you agree with president Bush that big tax cuts are the best way to revive our economy?

Joao M. Carvalho, Kendall, accounting auditor, 40

“It might not work because whoever receives the refunds may just deposit the money or use it to pay their expenses. The important thing is to create jobs, and there are better ways like more grants for small business and a lot of other things.”

Matthew Moskowitz, New York City, network news editor and producer, 29

“The economy needs a shot in the arm, but I don’t know if tax cuts are the answer. Nobody likes to pay taxes, but, if you cut them too much, somewhere you run short of money for certain things. There are things that can be done without massive tax cuts. I like the idea of abolishing taxes on dividends and getting rid of the death tax and the marriage penalty. Republicans say tax cuts will boost the stock market and some experts say the opposite.”

Lenny Mangual, Miami Beach, government clerk, 47

“Tax cuts are not really the solution. The problem is that we, the American people, can’t make sure that the money we are taxed goes to the right places. People like working stiffs and teachers get lost in the shuffle. The tax cuts would mostly benefit big business and large corporate enterprises and those making over $100,000. That’s what’s disturbing.”

Dan Famiglietti, Miami Beach, office manager, 62

“My understanding is that tax cuts will not really work to right the economy. I do believe in more incentives for businesses. The creation of jobs is what’s really important – although what would create them I’m not sure, short of war. But that’s a false economy. What we really need is more specific and graduated tax relief, especially for lower income families.”

Erik Anderson, Coconut Grove, model, 27

“I don’t believe the answer is that simple, but, for long-term growth, it’s a good step in the right direction. It will stimulate corporate spending and economic growth – which will trickle down, basically.”
