Nightlife

By Cubby

ANOTHER WHIRLWIND WEEK: With a week of multiple events nightly, I barely had time to recoup from each evening much less think about writing a column. Usually I sit at my computer at the end of an evening out and make notes but this week I collapsed in my bed so this column will be my week as I remember. Rushing from one party to the next, most nights I could barely remember where I was, much less who was there, so my party lists may not be complete and hopefully I won’t add names. Everyone on the beach seemed to be at the Ocean Drive 10th Anniversary Party at the Eden Roc Hotel and I did my best to quickly see (not talk) with everyone and luckily the fireworks display was timed perfectly for my exit heading to my post at the door of Prive. Most of the Ocean Drive party made their way to the door of Prive with all hugging and kissing as they entered. One little French man entered, who I didn’t recognize but he seemed to know me. “Cubby I’ve a photo of you that I printed in my publication in France,” he said. He pulled out the photo and shocked the pants off me as it was a photo taken in 1995 or 1996 at the opening of the Nicole Miller store. I almost didn’t recognize myself because it was before I dyed my hair white (no, it’s not natural folks). Another fabulous week of parties here in South Beach and I still haven’t recouped.

SINGIN’ UNDER THE STARS: Thursday night Nikki Beach kicked off their six week film series “Nikki Beach Cinema on the Sand” with the 1952 Classic “Singin’ in the Rain”.  After a perfect dinner under the stars (the food was delicious even though I couldn’t see it) we moved to one of the lounge chairs to enjoy this great film. Not many of my friends are into old musicals but luckily “Singin’ in the Rain” happens to be the favorite movie of my friend Janet Jorgulesco, so we were both in heaven (under the stars).  At Nikki Beach we ran into writers Tom Austin (Ocean Drive) and Brian Antoni who we invited to Pure Lounge, our next destination. They hadn’t heard about Ingrid Casares’s new party called Kiss the DJ (apparently they don’t read my column). NOTE: Nikki Beach’s Film Series of Turner Classic Movies runs until March 13 with films like North by Northwest (Feb 13th), Hairspray (Feb. 26th) and Casablanca (March 6th).

KISS THE DJ: The new Thursday night party at Pure Lounge hosted by Ingrid Casares with Jose Ortis and Elaine Lancaster was one of the best party experiences of my 8 years on the beach. This new lounge, located upstairs over Joia, offered a white playground of fun (everything is white including the bar, DJ booth, outdoor deck and leather couches) which was the perfect setting for this incredible mix of people who mingled and partied like old friends. From the society group led by Lea & Roy Black to the pack of boy models led by Marcus of Niva Models, the crowd danced (like no one was watching) to tunes provided by a lineup of kissable DJs, including Tara Solomon, Lady Bunny and Nayib Estefan. The DJ booth was a hot spot of energy surrounded by photographers and fans who watched the music masters spin (promoter Erica Freshman even did a turn at the tables). As you know I usually stay at an event for a half an hour before heading to my next destination but could not pull myself away from this party at Pure Lounge for hours (I must have had fun and even remembered to take a few photos). Among those SEEN: Erica Freshman, Jose Ortiz, Ernesto Arambatzis, Alicia & Dre, Ingrid Casares, Tom Austin, Brian Antoni, Lesley Abravanel, Janet Jorgulesco & Tom Grizzle, Eddie Smith (Joia/Pure), Tony Cho, Damon Goulet (Page 305 Models), Eryka Serria, Elizabeth Schwartz, writer Lydia Martin (Miami Herald), Ricki Salazar, Lady Bunny, Lisa Almy, Anthony Haas, Rudolphe Piper (Nerve), Nick D’Annunzio, Tara Solomon, Jimmy Palma, Norma Jean Abraham, Dr. Ron Roskin, Nayib Estefan, Roy & Lea Black, Lee Williams (New Times), and photographers Seth Browarnik (Ocean Drive), Adam Scull (New York Post), and Joseph Brown (South Beach Magazine). What a party.

EVERYONE’S AT EDEN ROC:  Well it certainly seemed like the entire beach was on the guest list for Ocean Drive’s 10th Anniversary party Friday night at the Eden Roc Hotel & Spa. What a beautiful night to party in this gorgeous setting under the stars. There was food and drink everywhere and clusters of beautiful people (everyone’s beautiful under the stars) chatting. We, my lovely companion Lisa Umbel and I, rushed from bar to bar trying to see everyone before I had to rush off to my post at Prive. As the crowd stood in awe watching the amazing fireworks display we squeezed through the crowd making a discreet exit without having to say goodbye. Among those SEEN (that I can remember): Glen Albin (Ocean Drive Magazine editor), Michael Capponi and fiancée Amie, Tony Guerra (now at Crobar), Kenny Smith (Crobar owner), Roy Hansen and Monster of Art Anastasia, the dazzling diva duo of Elaine Lancaster and Lady Bunny, Lisa Almy, Dan Matthews (Peta), Alan Roth (Rumi/Magic Garden), Buster (Alternative TV3), Brigitte Andrade, Jose Ortiz, Roy & Lea Black, Ingrid Casares, Tim Hogle & Irina (Tantra), Mary D., Merle Weiss, photographer Bill Wisser, Michael Dreiling, Crispy, Commissioner Luis R. Garcia and sons, G. Jack Donahue, publicist Brigitte Grosjean and writer Howard Cohen (Miami Herald).

FOLLOW THE CROWD TO PRIVE: Those who I didn’t get to see at the Ocean Drive party made their way to the door at Prive (even the beautiful Michelle Pommier). The crowds continued all night until I thought I couldn’t say hello and give another air kiss. Luckily around 3 a.m. Michael Capponi came down and told me I had to come upstairs and drink with him (my favorite part of the job). We took a bottle of champagne and found a spot in the hip-hop room where the party was set on INTENSE. Surely I worked off a few pounds watching the crowds dance. After two incredible parties and endless champagne I managed to bike home safely.

BEACH BUZZ: Space is limited this week so I’ll make this short. (Details to follow later.) Wednesday night I missed Roy Hansen’s birthday party at B.E.D. and also Saturday night I missed another party at Joia/Pure Lounge as I had spent the afternoon biking on the beach watching the beauties at Volleypalooza. Later Saturday night I was on the scene at the celebrity door host for the opening party of Orchid Lounge (the old W6). The crowd partied to hot music and enjoyed the hot (literally) performance of Fire Goddess “Jennifer” while I stood outside watching the police and the gangs. Flute Champagne Lounge (500 South Pointe Drive) opens Friday night (Valentine’s Day) with an invitation only party but will open to the public the following night. Finally Rudolph Piper has let the cat out of the bag about Nerve, his new club which he will open in the old Lola bar space on 23rd Street, with partners Michael Storms, Mario Sopena, and Roman Ricardo. Tony Guerra is now a partner at Crobar. Jade is still open and if you haven’t visited Maze (the old Salvation) you’re missing a hot new club. The Miami International Film Festival sponsors the film screenings on the beach at Nikki Beach club during the week of February 24th (free tickets available at Pink Palm, Books & Books and Nikki Beach). Just in time for Valentine's Day, Miss Kitty, South Beach’s 89-Year-Young Club Diva Extraordinaire is releasing her book: A Modicum of Eroticum.  Miss Kitty will be reading her poetry at the Borders Books Music and Cafe in Coconut Grove on February 14th (Valentine's Day) at 8 p.m. This is Kitty's first stop on her 20-city book tour, which will take her from NYC to LA through Spring/Summer 2003. For those that have never heard Kitty perform her work, they should be prepared to have a "blast" and a shock or two. Remember to send all nightlife info, invitations and valentines to cubbysobe@hotmail.com. Until next week, see you out.
