The 411

‘Night Fever’ Strikes

Crobar Buenos Aires is topless. Hold your hormones, by topless I mean the place has a retractable roof.

Bowling proved to be a sport that is very much staying alive on South Beach, as four generations of Gibbs joined Bee Gees star Barry Gibb last Wednesday night at Lucky Strike, apparently the hottest birthday party spot on South Beach. The celebration was threefold: Linda and Barry’s 35th wedding anniversary, Barry’s birthday and Barry’s son Ashley’s birthday. In between bowling, the group of about 50 munched on burgers and hors d’oeuvres and sipped sour apple martinis (while some of the adult kids downed lemon drop shots). There were three separate cakes – one for each occasion – each differently decorated. The anniversary cake was two-tiered with lifelike pink roses. Barry’s birthday cake, also two-tiered, had music notes and silver streamers all over it and Ashley’s cake had a basketball and music theme. The party went until 10 p.m., but some of the younger Gibbs extended the stay until midnight. Of course, the whole family belted out what sources are saying was the loudest version of “Happy Birthday” to date at Lucky Strike. The tables were filled with gifts for the extravaganza and clearly the family left happy, because sources say they left a very generous tip.

HANGING WITH…

Ronnie Brown, Miami Dolphins’ rookie running back, who hosts a Hurricane Katrina fundraiser on Monday, September 26 at the Home of Fine Decorators showroom in Hallandale Beach. A $100 donation includes open bar, hors d’ oeuvres, music by DJ Irie and an auction with top-notch sports memorabilia.

The 411: Richard Hamilton, Rashad McCants, Jermaine O’Neal and Cornelius Bennett are all scheduled to come to this event. It seems like a lot of athletes are doing their part.

Ronnie Brown: For the most part a lot of athletes want to be involved in stuff like this and give back to the community. That’s why a lot of us do the things that we do as far as going out and putting ourselves in these situations, playing football each and every day to be in a situation where we can be helpful.

It seems like the New Orleans Saints will be everyone’s second favorite team this season. Do you think America is pulling for them?

I think they are in the hearts of everybody as far as being able to deal with the situation that they’ve gone through. For them to go out and win their first game is definitely helpful to the community of New Orleans. Just to be able to give New Orleans something to turn to as far as getting their minds off of the situation.

What do you do when you are not raising money for charities or playing football?

At this point I’ve been relaxing a little bit and trying to get everything sorted out with my house and football. Once I get everything accommodated I think I’ll be able to do a little more but for the most part I’m just trying to get settled in right now.

Who is your best friend on the team?

Channing Crowder. Me and him hang out a lot. Since we’ve been here we’ve hung out a little bit during [training camp] and it’s grown since then. He and I established the best of relationships.

What CDs do you have on rotation in your car these days?

Young Jeezy, Anthony Hamilton, Lil Wayne, Trick Daddy, John Legend.

What do you miss most about college?

The atmosphere – being on a university campus and the festivities that come along with game day. The big games, like Georgia, where everyone comes down in their RVs, three and four days before the game and the whole atmosphere surrounding that.

BED, BASKETBALL AND BEYOND

Monday night at BED was a celebfest as Jamie Foxx, Christina Milian, Julius Irving, OJ McDuffie and Ki-jana Carter all held court at the popular Secret Society soiree hosted by Empire Events. Sources say Milian let loose, buying nearly $3,000 worth of liquor – including Grey Goose, Patron and champagne for her and her friends – and partied until around 4 a.m. Foxx, who rolled up in his silver Lamborghini, was up to his usual tricks, pouring shots of Grey Goose for the ladies and dancing to the hip-hop music most of the night. Irving, rumor has it, is in town filming a Converse commercial with Dwyane Wade but there is always time for a little South Beach.

FLOATING ART EXTENDS STAY

Miami Beach and Manhattan will continue their long-distance love affair this weekend as Social Miami at the Sagamore Hotel — a new restaurant-lounge concept soon to be unveiled at the South Beach hotel — sponsors the reception for the Whitney Museum of American Art / Minetta Brook's opening of Floating Island to Travel Around Manhattan Island by the late artist Robert Smithson. To be held from September 17 to 25, Floating Island comprises a tugboat towing a large barge, planted with vegetation. This man-made "island" will be visible to millions of New Yorkers from the shorelines of the Hudson, Harlem and East rivers. Originally scheduled to be touring Manhattan waters only on the two weekends due to limited funding, Floating Island was extended to a daily sight thanks to the generosity of art-loving friends including Sagamore Hotel owners Marty and Cricket Taplin.

CROBAR EN ESPAŃOL

Crobar, the Washington Ave. nightclub with locations in New York and Chicago, has traveled south of the border to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where the doors will open on Friday to the 20,000 square foot, multi-VIP room club. Crobar Buenos Aires uses actual city structures as part of its nightlife experience but the highlight of the new club is that Crobar Buenos Aires is topless. Hold your hormones, by topless I mean the place has a retractable roof. Popular DJ Tiesto bangs the electronic music beginning October 14.

SHARP DRESSERS WANTED

Hotel Victor has been a hot spot as of late, with Green Day hosting a big VMA afterparty and the Killers performing live from the hotel’s pool area on the big show. For the locals, however, the Friday night party hosted by Michael Madd and Alex Goudie is what’s heating up. This Friday, the “Only for the Sexy” party offers more than just booze and good music for the exceptionally good looking folks who make their way through the doors. Along with Edwin “The Stylistocrat” and Chris “The Father of Phashion” (you may have mistaken them for Outkast at any of the local parties), the “Only for the Sexy” crew will be handing out gift bags valued at $500 for the 10 best-dressed guys and 10 best-dressed girls at the party, which starts at 9 p.m. so get there early … and look your best.

ROCK ON, SOUTH FLORIDA

Although Paul McCartney plans to steal the show this weekend at American Airlines Arena, there are a number of concerts at smaller venues in the coming weeks. Tonight you can catch Less Than Jake and look out for Obituary, Mindless Self Indulgence, Fall Out Boy, Rusted Root and Liz Phair in the coming weeks.

The University of Miami Convocation Center presents Audioslave, live in concert on Tuesday, October 18. Featuring Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk, Audioslave will rock the 7,000-plus-seat entertainment facility. Kanye West also kicks off his 2005 North American tour there on October 11.
