Having It First
Fire-Fee Debacle Exposed
As the SunPost reported on January 12, as many as 80,000 property owners were illegally charged a fire-rescue fee by the city of Miami. So why did City Hall approve a settlement with only a half-dozen people and a mysterious group? A recently uncovered memo shows that Miami officials should have known what they were getting into. Hey, anything to save $75 million, right?

MIAMI BEACH
Tough Enough
While flattered that the county has followed suit, the Miami Beach City Commission thinks its own sex offender law is sufficient.

MIAMI
Who Needs History?
Coconut Grove Playhouse’s board members promise not to build a high-rise on top of the historic theater but they would not have a historic designation. Meanwhile, City Manager Joe Arriola blames lawyers for the fire-fee mess.

MIAMI
The Commish
Recently sworn in, Michelle Spence-Jones wants to make her district a better place to live and she would rather not fight with Mayor Manny Diaz to do it.

CORAL GABLES
Starving Galleries
Miami’s art scene is blowing up, leaving galleries in the City Beautiful hungry for attention. And so the municipality might combat the trend with lures like free parking.

War & Peace
What will be 35 floors high and nestled next to Williams Island? Lincoln Pointe, thanks to a settlement between developers and city officials. But an attempt to make legal peace has some residents screaming for blood.

MIAMI

A Grove property owner thought clearing his land of Wilma debris meant cutting down the trees. The cost of his mistake? Five figures and growing.

Superbowl XL Filled with
Medium-Sized Excitement

Only in America do millions quiet down to watch commercials and take bathroom breaks during football.

By Jon Warech

So the Superbowl — the game at least — was a super dud but the parties are always exciting. Whether you watched the game at The Mark on Brickell or the Raleigh’s Sunday Soiree or hit a house party, you no doubt got liquored up and filled with food among friends. It’s really a holiday of sorts in this great land of America, and what better way to spend it than stuffing your face, huddled around a TV. Only in America can you bet on what time the game will start, who wins the coin toss and how many slices of pizza I will eat before halftime (six for those keeping track). Only in America do millions quiet down to watch commercials and take bathroom breaks during football. And only in America do athletes rush to Disney World immediately after winning the biggest game of their lives. Isn’t it ridiculous? I waited the whole game for that Disney commercial, and I was not the only one pissed that the other commercials were terrible this year. The fact that the game was totally fixed fell to, like, 10th on the list of things that bothered me about Superbowl 2006 (with a bad case of indigestion rising four spots from last year to number five on said list). Nonetheless, it is a 40-year-old tradition that Americans wait all year for, and guess what? Next year it’s in Miami.

SHAQ UP

Have some spare change and a desire to hang with the Big Diesel? The Miami Heat are whoring out their big man, Shaquille O’Neal, for a once-in-a-lifetime experience where fans can bid to have Shaq come to their event, home or office for a 30-minute meet and greet. Bidding is under way now on HEAT.com and closes on Sunday at 11 p.m. The event must take place within 30 minutes of AmericanAirlines Arena, so have no fear the Lakers can’t bid to have him play just one more game in LA. The potential uses for the oversized guy are really endless in my head. A friend of mine had Glen Rice at his bar mitzvah back in ’93 and I think Shaq could be due to dance the hora in the near future. Whoever wins this auction, though, I’m begging to be invited. I just gotta see how this turns out. Oh, and by the way, all proceeds benefit the Miami Heat Charitable Fund and Shaquille O’Neal's Real Model Foundation.

MOSS CAMPED OUT AT DELANO

Big news this past week was that model/caught-in-the-act drug user Kate Moss was in town. I searched high and low for her (who you would figure would keep her nose out for the late-night parties) and came up empty. Apparently she was camped out in a bungalow at the Delano over the weekend and only came out to shoot on the beach with photographer Bruce Weber for Men's Vogue magazine. Sources say Weber's assistant stopped at C. Madeleine's vintage showroom and pulled tons of merchandise for the shoot, but Moss was nowhere to be found.

EXTREME MAKEOVER: MIAMI

The cameras were rolling — again — as ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Wedding Edition filmed nuptials at the Mandarin Oriental on Monday. After a couple hurricanes (Wilma in original location New Orleans and Wilma in the Keys) put a damper on production, the couple settled for sunny Miami, where I hear the third time was the charm. Karla Dascal of KARLA Conceptual Event Experiences created the wedding ceremony décor for the show, which will air mid-March.

SOUNDS OF SKYBAR

Morgans Hotel Group launched a two-disc music compilation that is now available for purchase in its hotel rooms worldwide and on the Web at www.morganshotelgroup.com. On Thursday night in the Redroom at Shore Club with the free vodka flowing, the crowd gathered for a listening party hosted by the album’s creator and co-producer Ben Pundole. I scored a free copy and it’s pretty dope. Alongside Grammy-nominated producer Ernie Lake and Joshua Katz of El Records, Pundole created an excellent mix of acoustic, hip-hop, electronic, dance, rock and R&B music. When I got home, I lit a candle and played the double-disc again and it was still pretty cool. You too can have a copy for just $22, unless you are like Pundole, who is from a land where the dollar is much more valuable. There it’s only $13.

RUBDOWNS AND WEDDING BELLS

SpaTerre at the Grove Isle Hotel & Spa officially opened its doors on a recent Monday night as hundreds of South Florida’s A-list crowd showed up for a guided tour filled with hors d’oeuvres and mini rubdowns. Kendra Todd, winner of the third season of Apprentice was in the house, as was NBC6 personality Lonnie Quinn, who sources say was scouting Grove Isle as a possible location for his ’07 wedding to Sharon Lima, aka Miss Brazil ’96.

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS WITH A KICK IN THE ASTOR

Time flies when you are having fun, doesn’t it? On Thursday, February 16, Hotel Astor celebrates its 10-year anniversary with a socialite-filled soiree in the Metro Kitchen from 8 to 11 p.m. The Astor as of late has been carried by its Tuesday night party, which has welcomed a number of celebrities from Tara Reid to Lenny Kravitz to Mickey Rourke basically every week. The crowd will stroll down memory lane over hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, while the hotel launches Astor Home and officially goes condo (or at least semi-condo), which seems to be the cool thing to do these days.

UPCOMING…

This Sunday night Mansion is hosting the screening of It’s All Gone, Pete Tong, the house music cult classic about superstar DJ Frankie Wilde and his journey dealing with hearing loss. Doors open at 8 p.m. with complimentary Möet & Chandon champagne from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., followed by the weekly “Made in Miami” party with legendary DJ Murk. Admission is $10 for the screening, or $20 after 11 p.m. for the party.
