Remember
the ’80s?
Ah, after a two-week, much-needed hiatus,
I’m back to tell you all about one of the
annual events Calendar Girl looks forward to
the most: The Fourth Annual ’80s
Prom. For those of you who missed your
high school prom because, a) you were too
cool for school-related events or b) you
are from another country, be sure to pen
this one into your calendars.
I mean, ’80s and prom, need I
say more? Plus, there won’t be another prom
for months so all the good dresses and
suits at the thrift store will still be
there, in all their tacky glory.
Get ready to see lots of teased hair,
skinny ties, and the tawdriest mess of
prints and patterns you’ll witness this side
of the Mississippi. OK, so I exaggerate, but
I am hoping to see a throwback to all those
’80s movie classics that have
inspired us all. Anyone up for
reconstructing the Pretty in Pink
prom dress.
This year, the annual prom moved to The
District from last year’s venue i/o, and
will feature the official prom band
Animals of the Arctic performing (what
else?) ’80s covers, beginning at
midnight. DJs Hottpants, Matt Cash,
Lahora and Dennis M will be spinning
’80s hits. And prom is not prom without
pictures — this year they will have a
photo booth, courtesy of Jipsy. Drink
specials include $3 Budweisers and prom
“punch.” Yum.
Now, I usually don’t do previews but this is
somewhat an exception. I went last
year, had a blast and even missed curfew
(kidding). Besides, dancing to ’80s music is
so delectable, even if you lived through
most of the decade while attending
elementary school.
Prom ’05 had the females rocking out the
ruffled dresses, high heels and
leggings. Side ponytails were
abundant as well. The guys, however, needed
a little help. Except for those few paying
homage to Miami Vice pastels
or breaking out the acid jeans, the
males displayed very little creativity.
Let’s see more of those A Flock of
Seagulls hairdos and suits in
metallic colors, boys.
The party starts at 11 p.m. and cover is
only $5. The District is located at 35 NE
40th St., Miami. For more information,
contact 305-576-7242.
