Tobacco Road Rocks in
94th Anniversary

Legendary Bar Celebrates Near-Century in Miami

By Jack Riggs

Generations of Miamians have propelled Tobacco Road to iconic status. Listening to live music and enjoying beverages and its full menu of extremely fairly priced good food has been a right of passage for almost a century for locals. Tobacco Road has been drawing in-the-know visitors just as long.

Tobacco Road will celebrate its 94th anniversary on Friday evening, Nov. 17, with three stages in the parking lot of the landmark bar and eight different bands performing.

“This year we thought we would focus on the best in Miami, so instead of one national headliner, we’d have the best bands in Miami all together,” said Alyse Goldberg, manager of Tobacco Road for the past 15 years.

Performing on large stages in the comfortable late-November evening will be the Spam Allstars, Suenalo Sound System, Joey Gilmore, Luis Bofill, Brother Bean, Shufly, Johnny Dread and Monkey Village.

Slated to begin around 8 p.m., the celebration is for those 21 and older. A cover charge of $10 per person “gets you all eight bands,” Goldberg said.

Tobacco Road asserts “Since the early 1900’s, Miami's Oldest Bar has overcome Prohibition, The Great Depression, Deadly Hurricanes, Disco, Cocaine Cowboys, South Beach and Hip Hop. Blues legends: John Lee Hooker, Koko Taylor, Albert Collins, Junior Wells and Buddy Guy have found their way to our Stages. We’ve been many things to many people - From a gay bar to a strip joint to an illegal drinking club.”

With music nightly, The Road continues to champion Miami’s live music scene,” Patrick Gleber, Tobacco Road’s owner for more than 22 years, has stated. “Our anniversary party is a great opportunity to bring home some of our community’s top local talent. It is a real celebration for live, local music.”

It most certainly has been a mainstay in an industry and community that doesn’t claim many.

“We were founded in 1912 and we’re just having a big party to celebrate being around 94 years,” Goldberg said.

Tobacco Road is located at 626 S. Miami Ave. in Miami. For more information call 305-374-1198 or visit www.tobacco-road.com
