Festivals & Sports

By Erik Bojnansky

What do Winter Party and the Dolphins have in common?

Answer: They are both listed in the Reason for Season’s Sports/Outdoors & Festivals sub-section, chapter thingy.

There’s a logic to our madness. For one thing, many festivals listed in this issue fit better into some of the other sub-section, chapter thingies — leaving few festivals, fairs and shows for this one. For another: Attending any festival, fair and show is an athletic event. You have to get there despite traffic. You have to stand in line. You have to walk around. You have to deal with members of your family or entourage saying, “I wanna go here” or “I wanna go there” or “I don’t know where to go. Got any ideas? No that’s stupid” or “I wanna divorce” or “I hate you, Daddy!” or “I hate you, Mommy!” or (for club-like festivals) “Why did I take the blue pill with Jack Daniels?” This can be as stressful as running any marathon or doing any 5K walk.

Here are a few examples of what we can look forward to, festival and sports-wise, here in South Florida.

Miami Dolphin home games. To quote sportswriter Hugo Guzman of realfootball365.com: “Nick Saban’s squad has repeatedly found imaginative ways to squander leads and sabotage comeback bids.” And the best way to see our home team lose in creative methods is to witness it live — that means buying tickets and driving over to Dolphins Stadium. Who knows? Maybe when you go over there the Dolphins will be creatively blocked and actually win a football game.

The Super Bowl. If the Dolphins make the Super Bowl this year it will reveal that the End Times are coming. Fortunately for South Florida’s tourism industry, the Super Bowl XLI is scheduled to come to Dolphins Stadium this February regardless.

The FedEx Orange Bowl. Scientists have proved that watching musclebound young male adults fling themselves against each other while wearing padding and chasing after a malformed leather-skinned “ball” is good for recovering from New Year’s Eve hangovers. As this year’s Orange Bowl event is slated for Jan. 2, it must be one heck of a hangover. Will the teams of FIU and UM make it this year? And if so, will there be a “rematch,” if ya know what we mean? We can only hope.

Sony Ericsson Open. The real fun is watching the rowdy individuals from all over the world root in their various native tongues for their favorite athlete. Oh and watching the tennis players chase around a small ball with fly-swatter-like devices commonly known as “tennis rackets” isn’t bad either.

Florida Marlins home games. As far as we know, the Florida Marlins will still be playing at Dolphins Stadium in April. And if, by some freak of chance, our baseball team wins the World Series, it will surely rejuvenate the eternal drive to get the government to pay for building another stadium somewhere in Miami-Dade — perhaps near the Everglades.

Miami Heat home games. The Mavericks learned the hard way (via losing the NBA championship to us) last year that Heat fans are prepared to use David Hasselhoff as a weapon when necessary.

The Miami International Boat Show. As per tradition, Miami Beach’s roads are clogged with tens of thousands of boat enthusiasts whom we affectionately call boat people and who drive in rented vehicles so they can gaze at boats and stuff. Great for the economy!

The King Mango Strut. Enter a parallel universe of political satire as interpreted by Coconut Grovers, Libertarians and Key West exiles.

The Winter Party. What better way for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Foundation to raise funds than with a weeklong circuit party?

Plus: The Gun and Knife Show, Supercon, a 5K run, trips through the Everglades, the Dachshund Winterfest, Panther hockey games, body building championships, bike rides. antique shows, NASCAR, the Dade County Youth Fair, wine festivals, the rodeo. Sure, it may seem a bit disjointed at first — dreamlike really, where things that seemingly don’t go together somehow weave a common thread in your subconscious. But we like it — it sings.
