The Singhs Have Run
House of India for More Than 30 Years
“My father still looks over the recipes he has perfected over
the years.”
By Ambar Hernandez
The Singhs seem to
have perfected the recipe for success. Coincidentally, that same
recipe has kept local taste buds coming back again and again for
more than 31 years.
Darshan Singh, the
founder of House of India, recently passed the family business on to
his son Sukhpal “Sunny” Singh, who has worked there since the age of
12 in every capacity, from dishwasher to food runner to delivery
boy.
Sunny, now 27,
still counts on his family to help out — Mom lends her hand to the
authentic Indian décor and his brother works at the restaurant from
time to time. And of course, Dad is still ultimately in charge.
“My father still
looks over the recipes he has perfected over the years,” said Sunny.
Young and seasoned
professionals in the Miracle Mile area are within walking distance
of House of India’s all-you-can-eat buffet for $7.95. For less than
$8 (not including tax or tip) anyone can enjoy a satisfying helping
(or three) of Indian staples like tandoori chicken, kabobs, meat and
vegetarian curries and more. Plus, there are drink specials
available.
On weekends, the
lunch buffet includes an assortment of additional items, hence the
$10.95 price. But its popularity deems it totally worth it.
House of India’s
varied menu also includes freshly baked Indian bread, soups,
appetizers like pakoras and samoas, and Indian desserts like gulab
jamun or kulfi, Indian-style ice cream.
Reservations are
strongly recommended for parties of five or more. Open daily from
11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for lunch, from 5 to 10 p.m. for dinner (until
11 p.m. Saturday). House of India is located at
22 Merrick Way, Coral Gables. Call
