OONTZ OONTZ OONTZ, CHA CHA CHA!

Miami and fashion are inextricably related. Always have been really. After all it’s what turned Washington Ave. from a run-down (alleged) gangster hangout into a premier center for glamour. Fabulous! It used to be that South Florida was the place to flee the authorities. Now we come out to see and be seen. Fashionistas rejoice. Annie Leibovitz might be able to tell you about that. She’s built an almost four-decade career on the fact that celebrities (and their portraits) are always in fashion. We got those. If you don’t believe it, ask her this week at the Lincoln Theater. Or just walk up Ocean Drive. We can have fur and knee-high boots too, the more fashion-forward among us decided. Smashing. We’ll pair it with jeans in tribute to the dichotomy that is our city’s collective consciousness. Poverty and wealth, sun and rain, happiness and loss, blazers and shorts. Here, the fashion sense thrives like the plant life. You can rock that too, at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. And the industry knows it well. We’ve got the sun and the faces, and what else do you need? After all, fashion can do a lot and we all know it. Even if the extent of your style sense is the new Target in Midtown, you’re not going to walk around in the proverbial potato sack anytime soon — not until J.Lo is seen in one anyway — hey embrace it! And we’ve got our own Fashion Week. So there.

And then there’s the society set. We wouldn’t give up our galas — not for all the sequins in the world. The Vizcayan Ball on Nov. 18 is on a site where they can hold a black-tie gala as easily as they could a Ren Fest.

And have sequins will travel, the Unicorn Ball on Feb. 11 at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach is a not-to-be-missed event for general hobnobbing and confabbing. But before you rumba up there, in December the UM Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center holds its In the Garden Gala, in Hollywood. Miami Beach will be graced by the “That’s Entertainment” Gala and Show to benefit Children’s Resources, and the Jackson Memorial Foundation’s Guardian of the Children’s Luncheon 2006, is being held in Miami. ’Tis truly the season for giving.

You don’t see dollar amounts listed for these events, and for good reason. Some organizations could require a small donation, some affairs are for “Founders” only — which could have translated into a gift in upwards of $50,000. We’ve listed some of those anyway, if anything just to give a nod in thanks to those folks who have committed that much to our local charities. Let ’em eat cake. And drink champagne. And wear sequins. Hopefully we can all agree that even if some of us can’t afford to attend some of these exclusive events we now know these organizations are out there. And if one person learns about a charity from these pages and sends them the price of that morning cup of coffee they skipped then it was well worth it. And that, good friends, is the reason for the season.
