Mary Damiano
More than two dozen
productions will open at Miami-area theatres this season — dramas to
make you think, comedies to makes you laugh and musicals to make you
sing your way home. Me, I’ll see them all, that’s a given. But there
are some things I’m especially looking forward to. Here are my picks
for the season’s highlights:
White Christmas
For me, nothing
says Christmas like a splashy holiday musical, and nobody does
splashy musicals like Actor’s Playhouse. The company will kick off
the holiday season with the first regional production of White
Christmas, a new musical based on the classic Bing Crosby movie,
with songs and lyrics by Irving Berlin. White Christmas runs
from Nov. 15 to Dec. 31. For more information visit
www.actorsplayhouse.org.
Sin Full Heaven
As an actor,
director, dancer, choreographer and artistic director of New Theatre
in Coral Gable, Ricky J. Martinez wears many hats. Early next year
he’ll be wearing a yet another, that of a playwright with a show
off-Broadway. But before Martinez’s play Sin Full Heaven
takes a bite out of the Big Apple, South Florida audiences will get
to see the world premiere of this gothic drama about a tyrannical
father who confines his adult daughter to his sugarcane plantation.
Sin Full Heaven runs Jan. 18 to Feb. 11. For more information
visit www.new-theatre.org.
Fat Pig
Neil LaBute is
about as edgy, controversial and politically incorrect as a
playwright can get. He likes to make audiences squirm and make them
think. In those ways, he has a lot in common with Joseph Adler, the
artistic director of the GableStage Theatre, which has produced
several LaBute plays in the last few years. The GableStage is set to
present the southeastern premiere of another LaBute Play, Fat Pig,
about a man tired of the insults lobbed at his large and lovely
girlfriend. Fat Pig runs Feb. 24 to March 25. For more
information visit www.gablestage.org.
Lavender
Footlights Festival
This coming April
marks the fifth anniversary of Lavender Footlights, the annual
festival of gay and lesbian-themed play readings produced by
Creative Arts Enterprises. The festival really came of age this year
as it settled into its space at Dot 51 Gallery, taking it out of a
traditional theatre setting and establishing itself as a hip
happening. During their first four years. The Lavender Footlights
Festival has presented plays by some of South Florida’s most dynamic
local talent, including Michael McKeever and Ricky J. Martinez, as
well as some the most well respected playwrights in the country,
like Claudia Allen, who attended the festival last May. I can’t wait
to see what they do next. This year’s Lavender Footlights Festival
runs April 18-22. For more information visit
www.caemia.org/lavender.htm.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Another musical
based on a movie, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is the second
Broadway Across America at the Carnival Center for the Performing
Arts. It’s about two con men in competition to scam a woman on the
French Riviera. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels runs Dec. 4-10. For
more information visit www.carnivalcenter.org.
