The Shootist
‘Punk Love’ Shutterbug Is One Sure Shot

See Rollins and MacKaye in all their wide-eyed fervor.

The Coral Gables Books and Books Author’s Gallery is a gaggle of heavyweights. Michael Ondaatje abuts Isabel Allende, who in turn stands alongside Bill Clinton and Maya Angelou. Farther along Russell Banks and Susan Sontag join Ann Beattie and Dave Eggers in full reveal. The shots are candid, the shots are keen, and the shots portray an insight their subjects take pages upon pages to reveal.

The shootist behind the sure-shots: Susie J. Horgan.

Miami-based Horgan comes about her incisive eye organically. As part of the early ’80s D.C. music scene that most notably produced Minor Threat and Black Flag, she was there at the threshold of hardcore history. More, Horgan’s kinship with now legendary Henry Rollins and Ian MacKaye gave her access few were granted, and even fewer were sure enough to capture.

“His energy was so big in every way — it reverberated,” she says of Rollins. “We couldn't help but connect. Our mutual love and respect for Ian brought us even closer — a true punk love friendship.”

With Punk Love (Universe/Rizzoli), those images are shared for the whole wild world. See Rollins and MacKaye (both contributors to the bound collection) in all their wide-eyed fervor. And see the scene that launched a hundred thousand legends.

Sure shooting, indeed.

See for yourself at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9 at Books & Books, 265 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables. Admission is free. Call 305-442-4408.
