boycott of Miami-Dade County involving Nelson
Mandela and Fidel Castro, developer R. Donahue Peebles
turned the decrepit Royal Palm Hotel into the one of the
most lucrative real estate deals in the city’s history.
During that period he also became the first black member
of the once waspy Bath Club, got the zoning changed and
then redeveloped it into a personal profit of about $60
million.
