Hood chats it up with Shawn C. Bean, author of The First Hollywood, a book about the early years of silent movie making in Florida’s very own movie mecca — Jacksonville?

Yeah, there were more stars out during Miami’s New Year celebrations than you could shake a stick at, but the big news was that the gold laden, skimpy speedo sportin’ Michael Phelps was spotted swimming in the rooftop pool at the Gansevoort…

FILM>>

Go ahead punk, make our day and watch the latest flick from the greatest, oldest tough guy left in the effete world of movie making. Yup, Clint Eastwood is back baby and although he’s an old coot, he’s an asskickin’ one and that’s all that counts. Oh, and Hudak actually liked Gran Torino.

Real Animal is the strongest album that Alejandro Escovedo has ever made. Well, at least that’s what he tells Alan Sculley. But, who cares about that, this guys band Nuns was the opening act for the infamous last ever show by the Sex Pistols. And, that rocks!

Keith London

The Rabble-Rouser

Instrumental in a recent push for ideals, newbie Hallandale Beach Commissioner Keith London, with a characteristic ponytail that betrays his hippie nature, has made the city proud.

Most recently, London went toe-to-toe with Mayor Joy Cooper about the practice of allowing city commissioners to sit on the city’s fire and police pension boards. The city’s charter prohibits dual office holding, and according to the fire and police departments, presents a conflict of interest.

The commission mostly disagreed, but London stepped up and waged a battle that was unpopular among his colleagues. Although Cooper and Commissioner Dorothy Ross still sit on the five-member pension board, which oversees $80 million in retirement investments, the city is now considering changing the law and, possibly, taking the issue to voters via a referendum.

London also spoke against the city’s offer to bail out the local real estate market by purchasing foreclosed properties and turning them into affordable housing. He opposed building the trash facility in a blighted part of town when other commissioners seriously considered dumping the city's 65 tons of daily trash there.

His was the voice of reason during the debate to allow Las Vegas-style slot machines in the city, and he has been instrumental in considering changes to the city’s master plan.

Keith London isn’t perfect, but he exemplifies what taxpayers should expect from their elected officials: activism.
