Hood chats it up with Shawn C. Bean, author of The First Hollywood, a book about the early years of silent movie making in Florida’s very own movie mecca — Jacksonville?

THE 411>>

Yeah, there were more stars out during Miami’s New Year celebrations than you could shake a stick at, but the big news was that the gold laden, skimpy speedo sportin’ Michael Phelps was spotted swimming in the rooftop pool at the Gansevoort…

FILM>>

Go ahead punk, make our day and watch the latest flick from the greatest, oldest tough guy left in the effete world of movie making. Yup, Clint Eastwood is back baby and although he’s an old coot, he’s an asskickin’ one and that’s all that counts. Oh, and Hudak actually liked Gran Torino.

Real Animal is the strongest album that Alejandro Escovedo has ever made. Well, at least that’s what he tells Alan Sculley. But, who cares about that, this guys band Nuns was the opening act for the infamous last ever show by the Sex Pistols. And, that rocks!

Keith Menin

The Hotelier

When he was just 21 and had already graduated from Cornell’s respected School of Hotel Administration, Keith Menin took a leaf out of the book of that other self-made real estate mogul, Donald Trump, and hit up a close relative for the $10 million loan to develop his first hotel, Sanctuary South Beach.

Menin then moved to Chicago, where he worked his second hotel deal and then, at 26, he became the first person to bring the famed Morgans Hotel Group (responsible for the Delano and the Shore Club) in on a real estate venture as an outside partner, becoming co-developer with them of Mondrian South Beach.

Menin has a knack for identifying great brand names and realizing their potential, and he is using that vision to move into the world of fashion as the financial backer and director of development for LUGO Roma — a men’s store in Manhattan with celebrity clients that include Jeremy Piven and John Legend — potentially in Miami.

So, what’s next? Well, how about the fast-paced world of fast food? Yes, Menin is getting into the pizza business, too. He is opening the Pizza Bar on Alton Road at the end of May.

“It will be a cool place with a bar that holds 35 people, with Rolling Stones music playing and Goodfellas on the TVs,” he says.

The owners of Spris, Rustica and Gino’s must be terrified.
