Hood chats it up with Shawn C. Bean, author of The
First Hollywood, a book about the early years of
silent movie making in Florida’s very own movie mecca —
Jacksonville?
THE 411>>
Yeah, there were more stars out during Miami’s New Year
celebrations than you could shake a stick at, but the
big news was that the gold laden, skimpy speedo sportin’
Michael Phelps was spotted swimming in the rooftop pool
at the Gansevoort…
FILM>>
Go
ahead punk, make our day and watch the latest flick from
the greatest, oldest tough guy left in the effete world
of movie making. Yup, Clint Eastwood is back baby and
although he’s an old coot, he’s an asskickin’ one and
that’s all that counts. Oh, and Hudak actually liked
Gran Torino.

Real Animal
is
the strongest album that Alejandro Escovedo has ever
made. Well, at least that’s what he tells Alan Sculley.
But, who cares about that, this guys band Nuns was the
opening act for the infamous last ever show by the Sex
Pistols. And, that rocks!

Manuel Prieguez Jr.
The Rep
It was just last month that former state Rep. Manuel Prieguez Jr.,
lobbying on behalf of Capitol Outdoor Advertising, contended that
his client should get first priority in the regulation of illegal
mural advertisements that had sprung up all over Miami.
Because his company did not post illegal murals, he reasoned, it
should be first in line to put up more. Plus, he argued, many of
the mural companies are located out of town and don’t know they
are breaking any laws.
Ahhh, you’ve gotta love hearing the ignorance argument from a
former lawmaker. Oddly enough, the buzz is that the guy may be,
perhaps, the only ethical lobbyist in town.
Prieguez is also a player in matters pertaining to the
Miami River, where he operates the three-decades-old family
business, Miami River Lobster and Stone Crab, founded by his
father. In the last several years, the river has been at the
forefront of development debates amid efforts to oust water-based
industry to develop residential waterfront projects.
Prieguez, a popular six-year veteran of the Florida House of
Representatives, left in 2004 and became just another
Miami lobbyist. Upon hearing that Prieguez had become a lobbyist,
former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor reportedly
weighed in, saying, “There is no shortage of lobbyists in
Miami.
In fact, there may be more lobbyists than people.”
