Hood chats it up with Shawn C. Bean, author of The First Hollywood, a book about the early years of silent movie making in Florida’s very own movie mecca — Jacksonville?

THE 411>>

Yeah, there were more stars out during Miami’s New Year celebrations than you could shake a stick at, but the big news was that the gold laden, skimpy speedo sportin’ Michael Phelps was spotted swimming in the rooftop pool at the Gansevoort…

FILM>>

Go ahead punk, make our day and watch the latest flick from the greatest, oldest tough guy left in the effete world of movie making. Yup, Clint Eastwood is back baby and although he’s an old coot, he’s an asskickin’ one and that’s all that counts. Oh, and Hudak actually liked Gran Torino.

Real Animal is the strongest album that Alejandro Escovedo has ever made. Well, at least that’s what he tells Alan Sculley. But, who cares about that, this guys band Nuns was the opening act for the infamous last ever show by the Sex Pistols. And, that rocks!

Martin Z. Margulies

The Art Collector

Martin Z. Margulies is one of the world’s 200 top art collectors. His dominance over the Miami art scene is amazing, and his eponymous Sculpture Park at Florida International University featuring the works of Calder, Nevelson and Serra is the largest ever built on a university campus. His collection at the Warehouse in Miami’s fashionable Wynwood Arts District holds a vast collection of vintage and contemporary photography alongside videos, installations and sculptures. The Warehouse is more than 45,000 square feet in size; to put that in perspective, the new, multimillion-dollar Miami Art Museum to be built in Bicentennial Park will have only 32,000 square feet of gallery space when it is completed.

So, who is this art hog? Well, disappointingly enough, he is yet another real estate developer, although admittedly one who produces better-than-average buildings. His projects include the Bellini in Bal Harbour — for which Margulies made several trips to Italy and Turkey to personally choose the marble, granite and terracotta that adorn the structure — the Grand Bay Towers in Key Biscayne and Grove Isle in Coconut Grove. He also signed onto Norman Braman’s lawsuit to stop the Miami-Dade and Miami governments’ multimillion-dollar redevelopment plan.

When he is not building massive structures and art collections, Margulies is active in the community with charitable work. In 2004, he hooked up with Miami Heat basketball star Alonzo Mourning to create the Overtown Youth Center, giving $2.5 million for an 18,000-square-foot facility that provides after-school educational and athletic programs for underprivileged children. That’s nice.
