Hood chats it up with Shawn C. Bean, author of The First Hollywood, a book about the early years of silent movie making in Florida’s very own movie mecca — Jacksonville?

THE 411>>

Yeah, there were more stars out during Miami’s New Year celebrations than you could shake a stick at, but the big news was that the gold laden, skimpy speedo sportin’ Michael Phelps was spotted swimming in the rooftop pool at the Gansevoort…

FILM>>

Go ahead punk, make our day and watch the latest flick from the greatest, oldest tough guy left in the effete world of movie making. Yup, Clint Eastwood is back baby and although he’s an old coot, he’s an asskickin’ one and that’s all that counts. Oh, and Hudak actually liked Gran Torino.

Real Animal is the strongest album that Alejandro Escovedo has ever made. Well, at least that’s what he tells Alan Sculley. But, who cares about that, this guys band Nuns was the opening act for the infamous last ever show by the Sex Pistols. And, that rocks!

Charles W. Burkett

The Mogul Mayor

Charles W. Burkett was re-elected in March to a second two-year term as mayor of the teeny town of Surfside.

Burkett was born and raised in Miami Beach, but moved to Surfside in 1995. Although his political opponents have called him a (caution, rude word ahead) “developer,” he likes to describe himself as a preservationist who has made his millions renovating Art Deco properties on Miami Beach rather than in new construction. And, indeed, the federal government has officially recognized many of his investment properties as historic renovation projects.

Burkett has done all the usual local politico stuff, such as serving as a Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce board member and a member of the Nuisance Abatement Board. He served as a commissioner of the Miami Beach Housing Authority for eight years, including four as chairman, streamlining its $22 million budget and increasing staff efficiency.

As a board member and officer of the LaGorce Drive and Pinetree Drive Homeowners Association, Burkett took part in redesigning the streets to include those really annoying speed traps and other restrictions.

Then, as president of the North Beach Development Corporation, Burkett continued to irritate commuters while northern Miami Beach underwent its complete streetscape program. He has also served on the Community Development Block Grant Board, allocating funds to such worthy organizations as Log Cabin Nursery and Meals on Wheels in North Beach.

Furthermore, he has been active for years with the Miami Beach Police Athletic League and Citizens Police Academy, which is ironic since Police Academy 5: Assignment Miami Beach might actually be the worst movie ever made.
