Hood chats it up with Shawn C. Bean, author of The
First Hollywood, a book about the early years of
silent movie making in Florida’s very own movie mecca —
Jacksonville?
THE 411>>
Yeah, there were more stars out during Miami’s New Year
celebrations than you could shake a stick at, but the
big news was that the gold laden, skimpy speedo sportin’
Michael Phelps was spotted swimming in the rooftop pool
at the Gansevoort…
FILM>>
Go
ahead punk, make our day and watch the latest flick from
the greatest, oldest tough guy left in the effete world
of movie making. Yup, Clint Eastwood is back baby and
although he’s an old coot, he’s an asskickin’ one and
that’s all that counts. Oh, and Hudak actually liked
Gran Torino.

Real Animal
is
the strongest album that Alejandro Escovedo has ever
made. Well, at least that’s what he tells Alan Sculley.
But, who cares about that, this guys band Nuns was the
opening act for the infamous last ever show by the Sex
Pistols. And, that rocks!

David Custin
Machiavellian Politico
If you want to get elected to public office, you might want to hire
David Custin.
He helped get Miami Beach Commissioners Jonah Wolfson and Deede
Weithorn into office, but his reach goes far beyond the Beach.
The tentacles of his namesake lobbying and political consulting
firm, David R. Custin & Associates, Inc., reach from the political
back rooms of
South Florida to
Tallahassee and all the way to the hallowed halls of
Washington,
D.C.
Custin guided State Sen. Alex Villalobos to a successful 2006
re-election and ensured the congressional victories of Mario and
Lincoln Diaz-Balart.
Favors are the name of the game in Custin’s world: Whether it
involves health care, education, energy, juvenile justice, child
welfare, growth management, pari-mutuels, telecommunications or
redistricting, Custin is your man.
Custin has a Machiavellian reputation when it comes to politics,
making him a feared winner known for his use of attack mailers.
During Wolfson’s race against Luis Salom, Tell the Public the
Facts, a group tied to Custin, attacked Salom with two flyers
about Salom missing four Youth Advisory Board meetings between
2002 and 2004. Custin denied involvement.
In politics, people only remember the winners, and many of them owe
their success to Custin.
